About the Evaluation Framework & Instrument

The Nexus LAB team, in partnership with TrueBearing Consulting, Educopia Institute, and the Center for Creative Leadership, issued this fully validated, adaptable, and customizable evaluation instrument in 2017. The evaluation instrument is based on rigorously validated leadership competencies documented in the “Layers of Leadership” publication produced by the Nexus LAB team under the guidance of the Educopia Institute and the Center for Creative Leadership.

The ETD+ Guidance Briefs are a set of free introductory training resources on crucial data curation and digital longevity techniques. Focusing on the Electronic Thesis and Dissertation (ETD) as a mile-marker in a student’s research trajectory, the series provides in-time advice to students and faculty about avoiding common digital loss scenarios for the ETD and all of its affiliated files.

The “Layers of Leadership,” developed in partnership by Educopia Institute, the Center for Creative Leadership, and more than 35 museum, library, and archives associations and representatives, provides a common lens for understanding high-demand leadership training skills and competencies in these fields. The "Layers of Leadership" documents the key challenge, key leadership tasks, skills necessary to address those tasks, and outcomes sought within seven "layers" of leadership, from "Leading Self" to "Leading the Organization" to "Leading the Profession."

Disaster, loss, and failure preoccupy the minds of many digital preservation professionals and yet, despite the prominence of digital disaster planning guidelines which seem to anticipate failure, there is limited discussion of experience with preservation system or network failures, which are often framed as inevitable in digital preservation. Despite this framing, negative perceptions of failure influence the digital preservation discourse by associating failure with poor planning, unreliability, and untrustworthiness on the part of institutions.

In phase 1 of the Nexus LAB (Leading Across Boundaries) project, the Nexus LAB Layers of Leadership design framework was developed. This model is arranged in terms of six Layers relating to a progression of roles. Each Layer addresses the leadership knowledge, skills and abilities required for success in the Layer’s roles as well as broader outcomes and shared skills across Layers. In addition, the model identifies a Key Role and a Challenge associated with each Layer.

This publication aims to introduce guiding principles and practices for CE/PD needs assessments from beyond the library, archives, and museum (LAM) sphere of reference. A literature review section highlights needs assessment research from other fields (e.g., higher education, nonprofit training, etc.), drawing attention to models that could inform LAM practice. Existing LAM CE/PD needs assessment efforts are then contextualized against these models to inform future cross-sector CE/PD collaborations.

Colleges and universities are steadily transitioning from traditional paper and microfilm to digital formats for the submission and dissemination of graduate theses and dissertations. While this move from print-based to electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) greatly enhances the accessibility and sharing of graduate student research, it also presents significant challenges for the academic libraries that must preserve this digital content.

Libraries and other cultural memory organizations curate a substantial body of digital newspaper content. The genesis of these collections is often a series of iterative and cumulative digitization and born-digital acquisitions with idiosyncratic and ad-hoc data storage structures that vary radically in their file types, structures, and metadata. These institutions have limited resources to expend on the normalization or restructuring of their legacy digital content.

On May 23-25, more than 125 delegates from more than 20 countries gathered in Tallinn, Estonia, for the "Aligning National Approaches to Digital Preservation" conference. At the National Library of Estonia, this group explored how to create and sustain international collaborations to support the preservation of our digital cultural memory. This publication contains a collection of peer-reviewed essays that were developed by conference panels and attendees in the months following ANADP.
